SD&G Scoop – Your Local Lowdown for July 10-17, 2025!
Hey there, neighbours! π
We’re rolling into mid-July with a calendar full of music, magic, and memorable moments — and we’re kicking things off with a little love for local talent. πΆ β€οΈ
This Friday night, head on over to Wood Brothers Brewing Co. for a very special performance by our dear friend Ryan O’Neil and his partner Amanda . The two are bringing their signature harmonies to the brewery’s outdoor Summer Concert Series — and trust us, you don’t want to miss the vibes, the vocals, or the cold craft beer! (No cover charge, just bring your lawn chair and your best summer energy.)
While you’re here, don’t forget to check out our Meet Your Neighbour section for a spotlight on the incredible behind-the-scenes crew at Upper Canada Village — the folks who keep history alive with their craftsmanship and care.
And speaking of behind the scenes… next week’s edition of The Scoop will launch a brand new Local Business Spotlight feature! We’ll be pulling back the curtain on the day-to-day lives of some of SD&G’s most passionate entrepreneurs — the makers, bakers, and movers who power our community. You’ll get the inside scoop (pun very much intended!) on what inspires them, how they got started, and what keeps them going.
So stay tuned, scroll on, and as always — let us know what’s happening in your neck of the woods. We love hearing from you.
Let’s dive into the week! π

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR
π
The Behind-the-Scenes Team at Upper Canada Village

The talented crew at Upper Canada Village
It’s often said that it takes a village — and nowhere is that more true than at Upper Canada Village in Morrisburg. While visitors admire the charm, history, and beauty of the site, there’s an incredible crew of tradespeople working quietly behind the scenes to keep that magic alive.
From building fences and restoring cannon carriages to installing shutters, rebuilding wagons, and even refurbishing benches at the Battle Memorial Building — the maintenance team at the Village does it all. Their work not only preserves the past but breathes life into it for future generations to enjoy.
The Upper Canada Village team recently gave a well-deserved spotlight to these talented craftspeople:
-
π Justin M – Carpenter
-
π Don B – Carpenter
-
π Pat T – Carpenter/Timber Framer
-
π Mike S – Painter/Decorator
-
π Trevor M – Maintenance Mechanic
-
π Jonathan B – Plumber
-
π Darren G – Electrician
Whether it's installing new windows at Cook’s Tavern or assisting with the restoration of the flour mill, their projects are no small feat — and many require complete overhauls and custom craftsmanship. Their attention to detail and passion for preservation can be seen in every corner of the Village.

So next time you're at Upper Canada Village, take a moment to appreciate not just the historical charm, but the hardworking folks who make it all possible. Thank you to the entire maintenance crew for keeping our shared history alive — one careful repair at a time! π οΈ π

Cowabunga, Cornwall!

Another great illustration from Nathan Gowsell Creative
We’re back with another vibrant blast from the past — and if you grew up catching flicks at The Port Theatre, this one’s bound to hit you in the nostalgia.
Local artist Nathan Gowsell has done it again with another stunning piece, this time featuring a whimsical, neon-hued rendering of The Port’s iconic marquee all lit up for a screening of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. If you’ve been with us for a while, you’ll recognize Nathan’s work — this isn’t his first time gracing The Scoop’s pages — but this one is especially close to our hearts. It captures not just a place, but a memory that so many locals share.
And the coolest part? The Port is bringing that exact movie back to the big screen this August — and keeping it just as accessible as ever, with tickets for only $5 . Now that’s what we call shell-shocking value! π’ π¬
Whether you’re reliving your childhood or introducing the turtles to a new generation, this kind of community magic is what keeps places like The Port special.
π¨ Big thanks to Nathan Gowsell for sharing another piece of Cornwall’s story in full colour.

Meet Peanut!

Meet Peanut!
This week’s spotlight is on a sweet little lady with a big heart and even bigger ears — say hello to Peanut , a 7-year-old female chihuahua currently looking for her forever home through the Ontario SPCA Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry Animal Centre.
Peanut is a gentle soul who thrives in calm, quiet environments. The busy shelter life has been a bit overwhelming for her, but her caregivers say she’s slowly coming out of her shell — and once she settles into a loving home, she’s sure to blossom into a loyal, loving companion. π
She may need a bit of time to decompress, but for the right family, Peanut will be a wonderful best friend who’s ready to enjoy the cozy, quiet moments of life — think soft blankets, sunny windows, and afternoon cuddles.
πΆ Ready to meet her? Stop by the Cornwall Centre at 550 Boundary Road between 11 AM and 5 PM for a meet-and-greet.
Let’s help this lovely girl find the peaceful retirement home she deserves. If you or someone you know has a quiet space and a warm heart, Peanut could be the perfect match. π

COMMUNITY WINS
π
Morris Glen Brings Affordable Housing—and Hope—to Morrisburg

No more mullets!
This week’s Community Win is all about home, heart, and housing progress. π
Big news out of Morrisburg: the official opening of Morris Glen , a brand-new affordable housing development, is helping families and individuals in our region find a safe place to call home.
The 17-unit project includes 12 rent-geared-to-income units and 5 market-rate homes, offering a supportive mix for a diverse range of residents. From first-time renters to seniors and folks with mobility challenges, Morris Glen was designed with real people and real needs in mind—right down to the barrier-free units and nearby access to grocery stores and medical services.
Backed by a $1.7 million investment from the Government of Ontario’s Social Services Relief Fund and developed in partnership with the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SDG, this milestone project is a shining example of what happens when different levels of government come together for the common good.
π SDG Warden Martin Lang called it “a significant step forward” and a model for future sustainable communities.
π South Dundas Mayor Jason Broad summed it up best: “Morris Glen is more than a building; it’s a reflection of our community’s values.”
Residents are already moving in—and for many, it’s the beginning of a brighter chapter. That’s a win worth celebrating.
π¬ Got another community win we should know about? Send it our way at jared@sdgscoop.ca —we love sharing the good news!
JUST FOR FUN
π― Games Corner – Just for Fun!
This week’s local trivia is all about a surprising Hollywood connection…
π§ Did you know that actor Ryan Gosling — yes, that Ryan Gosling — once called Cornwall home?
He was born in London, Ontario, but moved to Cornwall at just two years old and spent much of his childhood here. He even attended Gladstone Public School and Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School!
Now that's a bit of star-studded SD&G history! π
Have a fun fact or bit of trivia about our region? Send it to us and you might see it featured in a future issue of The Scoop!
