SD&G Scoop – Your Local Lowdown for September 4-11, 2025!

September 4, 2025

Hey there, Cornwall & SD&G crew!   πŸ‘‹

One of the things we’re most proud of at The Scoop is that this newsletter has always been for the community - and shaped by your feedback. Whether it’s event shoutouts, local history tidbits, or Pet of the Week cuteness, your voices guide what we do.

Lately, a lot of you have told us you’d love a discount card for local SD&G businesses …something that saves you 10–20% at your favourite spots and gives back at the same time. Here’s the idea:

πŸ‘‰ Each card would cost a small one-time fee, with $10 from every purchase going directly to a local charity (and you’ll get to vote on which one!).

We know Cornwall & SD&G folks like a good deal, so here’s our question to you:

πŸ’¬   Poll time!

Click on the above poll and let us know - your feedback will help us make this happen in a way that works for everyone.

Now, onto this week’s lineup of events, neighbours. It’s a good one! πŸ‘‡

With only 20 spots available per time slot, it’s an intimate and enriching way to soak up both history and the early signs of autumn around the Village. πŸ‘‰ Note: Guests must stay with their guide, only select buildings are open, and no food is sold on-site (but the Village Store will be open from 10 AM to 4:30 PM). Service animals are welcome.

✨ Bring some friends, grab a pint, and be part of the magic - Thursdays in Alexandria just got a whole lot better!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBOUR
πŸ‘‹   A Cleanup Hero on CR 18

Check out Lise’s artwork if you have a furry pet at home

This week’s “neighbor” feature comes with a little twist - we don’t actually know their name or face, but their good deed speaks louder than any introduction could.

Local resident Diverdan shared this snapshot on Facebook, showing a big cleanup effort at the pond on CR 18. Someone (or maybe a few someones!) took the time to gather bags of garbage and tidy up this beautiful little spot, making it nicer for everyone who passes through. πŸŒΏπŸ’š

Not every “Meet the Neighbor” story we share will have a smiling photo and a name attached. Sometimes it’s about the quiet acts of kindness - the folks who see something that needs to be done and just do it, without asking for thanks.

So, if you’re reading this and you’re the one behind this cleanup: thank you . From your neighbors and the broader SD&G community, we appreciate your time, effort, and pride in keeping our corner of the world looking its best.

πŸ‘‰ Let’s all take a note from this anonymous hero and do our part to keep our shared spaces clean, welcoming, and beautiful.

THROWBACK CORNER
πŸ“Έ   Winter on Pitt Street, 1934

This week’s snapshot takes us all the way back to December 1934, looking out from Gadbois Jewellers at 108 Pitt Street. ❄️ Through the frosty window, you can spot The Freeholder printing office across the street, and a horse-drawn team hard at work clearing the snowbanks.

As Maurice Taillon, who shared this gem, points out: once the centre of the street was ploughed, the rest of the job fell to a horse team and just three men with shovels. Talk about winter hustle before the era of big snowplows! πŸŽπŸ›·

It’s a reminder of just how different (and hands-on!) life in Cornwall once was - when teamwork, strong backs, and horsepower literally kept the city moving through winter storms.

Those really were the days (kidding, I wouldn’t survive).

PET OF THE WEEK
🐐   Meet Winny & Remi!

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on two pint-sized charmers from Saunders Country Critters - meet Winchester (Winny) & Remington (Remi) , a brand-new duo of African Pygmy goats! Don’t let their small size fool you, these two are bursting with personality, mischief, and a whole lot of heart. πŸ’š

Their names carry a special story. They were chosen in memory of Gunner, a beloved black goat who sadly passed last winter. The white markings on one reminded the team of Winchester - a nod not only to Gunner but also to the nearby town of Winchester, famous for its large milk processing plant. Every animal at Saunders Country Critters has a name with meaning, and Winny & Remi are no exception.

Here’s a fun fact: Pygmy goats are true escape artists . They can climb, squeeze, and wiggle through spots you’d swear were too small - and yes, they’re excellent jumpers too! (Apparently, nowhere is out of reach for these two πŸ˜… ). Even cooler, goats have rectangular pupils, giving them nearly 340-degree vision. Translation? Winny and Remi can spot you coming from almost every angle without moving their heads - always one step ahead! πŸ‘€

Every visit helps support the sanctuary’s animals - and trust us, meeting Winny & Remi will make your day.

COMMUNITY WINS
πŸ† Big Screen, Big Hearts at Bud’s Records

Talk about music, movies, and making a difference! 🎬 🎢 Bud’s Records and Kool Things recently hosted a screening of The Borrower - and it wasn’t just about popcorn and cult classics (though The Port Theatre’s tasty popcorn was a hit!).

With two movie nights and their ever-popular mystery bags, Bud’s managed to raise $410 for The Agapè Centre . πŸ’™ That’s a whole lot of community support packed into a cozy vinyl-lined space.

It’s always inspiring to see how small, creative gatherings can bring people together - not only for fun, but also to give back in meaningful ways. A huge shoutout to Bud’s Records, The Port Theatre, and everyone who came out to support. Proof once again that when SD&G shows up, we show up big!

JUST FOR FUN
πŸŒ½πŸ‘‘ Did Cornwall Get Its Name from Corn?

With harvest season in full swing, we couldn’t help but wonder… did Cornwall get its name from actual corn ? As it turns out - nope! The name has royal roots, not farming ones.

When the area was first settled by United Empire Loyalists in 1784, it was originally called New Johnstown . But by the 1790s, it was renamed Cornwall in honour of Prince George , who later became King George IV. At the time, Prince George held the title of Duke of Cornwall in England, and the town’s new name was a nod to that duchy.

So while Cornwall’s name doesn’t come from cornfields, it does have a pretty regal backstory! Still, given the season, we think a few corn-themed celebrations wouldn’t be out of place. πŸŒ½πŸ‚

πŸ‘‰ Fun challenge: If Cornwall had been named after corn, what do you think our town mascot would look like? A crowned cob of corn, perhaps? πŸ‘‘πŸŒ½

ESTATE & NEIGHBOURHOOD BUZZ
🏑 A St. Lawrence Island Retreat for $215K

Every now and then, a property pops up that makes us do a double take — and this one on St. Francis Island is exactly that. Listed at just $215,000 , this modern 2-bedroom chalet (completed in 2023!) is a rare chance to own a slice of paradise right on the legendary St. Lawrence River without breaking the bank. 🌊✨

Fully furnished and move-in ready, the chalet combines comfort with scenic beauty. Picture yourself unwinding on a level, expansive lawn with jaw-dropping river views that seem to go on forever. The property comes with a meticulously maintained dock - perfect for boating, fishing, or just dipping your toes in after a hot summer day. 🚀🎣

Inside, the home blends modern design with cozy charm, while thoughtful touches like a lake water intake system and holding tank make life easy and sustainable. Whether you’re after a weekend getaway, a recreational haven, or even an investment property, this waterfront gem checks all the boxes.

Properties along the St. Lawrence are notoriously scarce, especially at this price point. So if you’ve been dreaming about morning coffee with river breezes and evenings watching freighters cruise by, this might be your sign to make the leap.
